Bright Curves Residence: A Playful and Contemporary Blend of Mid-Century Influences

A Unique and Flexible Space for Play and Entertaining

The inspiration for the Bright Curves Residence came from the play of light off a surface at sunset and the work of light artists in using the immaterial to alter and shape the experience of space. The design concept aimed to create a space that is flexible yet continuous, fun yet serious. It is a space for play and entertaining that changes throughout the day, creating different moods, atmospheres, and interactions.

What sets the Bright Curves Residence apart is its formal language, which uses soft curves to create a continuous and playful space. This design approach makes the residence suitable for both adults and children, with unique design elements that alter how the space is used. The use of color-changing LED lighting in all rooms, a fiber optic ceiling in the kids' bedroom that lights up like a star constellation, and a decorative screen made of thermo-formed acrylic are just a few examples of the innovative features that make this residence truly special.

Technologically, the Bright Curves Residence showcases the use of custom terrazzo flooring, handmade terra cotta tiles for the kitchen, hidden spaces with heat-bent Corian walls for artwork, and a bent glass display case at the front entry. These elements not only enhance the visual appeal of the space but also contribute to its functionality and uniqueness.

The design team faced several challenges while bringing the Bright Curves Residence to life. They chose to use traditional materials such as terrazzo in novel ways, creating a pattern that transitions from small pieces in the entry to larger color blocks in the kitchen. They also designed a durable and beautiful screen using manufacturing technology typically used for children's toys. Additionally, they installed a fiber optic ceiling with nearly 1500 unique points, simulating the night sky above the bedroom.

Completed in January 2014, the Bright Curves Residence spans 178 square meters and is a testament to the meticulous research and attention to detail that went into its creation. The use of materials like Corian, plaster, glass, and terrazzo allowed the design team to sculpt a simple space with soft curves, conveying the qualities of varying light and creating a sense of depth.

The Bright Curves Residence was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2014 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
